For every day use, a well-functioning mesh network is mainly a hobby activity for volunteers with an interest in radio, technology and IT. The motivation for doing it is simply because it’s fun! It’s an act of community oranizing and preparedness.
In the event that a crisis situation arises, a functional mesh network can be a complementary form of communication, for divil defense, rescue efforts or other situations where “regular” forms of civilian communications (Internet, mobile phone networks) are not available.
